Our new school year is well underway. We've spent the first few weeks reviewing library rules and how to look after books that get taken home. We've had lively discussions about the damage dogs can do to books and I even showed some example (the kids are always very interested and grossed out by some of my examples, LOL!) Ask your student some of the ways that they can show good manners with their library books at home.
Readathon day was Monday, there were many book themed characters wandering the school and it was great to have such great weather so our parade could go outside this year. A very big thank you to the Readathon Committee for making this day so successful for Shepardson.
Kindergarten were busy on a farm animal unit in their classroom so we read Dooby Dooby Moo and we completed a Farm Animal ABC order activity. In First Grade we read the folktale Strega Nona and then wrote and drew about our favorite parts of the story. In Second Grade we read Big Wolf and Little Wolf and then worked on being proficient at using tables of contents. Third Grade worked on using context clues to identify book subjects and titles from book covers. With Fourth Grade we began our study of the Dewey Decimal System. With Fifth Grade we continued looking at reference materials, in particular we looked at the text features of almanacs. This was our Second Shining Star Assembly and I choose Mrs. Hawkes' class as the recipients of the Media Center Golden Book Award.
Since this is the week before Halloween, I choose Halloween themed books and activities. Kindergarten are learning about spiders in their classroom so I we read a fiction and nonfiction book about spiders and we completed a Smartboard activity about the parts of a spider. I mixed it up with First Grade and instead of reading to them we watched the animated story Room on the Broom. Second grade heard Picnic at Mudsock Meadows and we worked on character descriptions. Third Grade continued looking at fiction call numbers and ways to choose a book when there are literally thousands to choose from in our media center. Fourth Grade began looking at how nonfiction books are arranged in the media center. We finished looking at the Dewey Decimal System with my fifth grade classes and are now taking a detailed look at the kinds of reference sources available to them. This seemed like a quiet week although PTO did put on their first Movie Night of the year- Zootopia. I hope all those students that got to attend had fun!
Kindergarten are learning about pumpkins so I supported their classroom learning by reading Pimpkin Jack and doing a pumpkin liefcycle activity on the SmartBoard. First grade made text connections to a wonderful book called Otis. Second Grade heard Library Mouse: A Museum Adventure and then worked on understanding Title and Copyright pages. Third grade worked on tables of contents and learned a few things about Penguins too. Fourth grade continued learning how to cite sources of information. Fifth grade are keeping up with me as we continue our ever increasingly detailed look at the Dewey Decimal system. Our tables activities were: Red: Yellow: Green: Blue: Purple: This week was different in that there was no school on Thursday or Friday due to 2 teacher work days and we had a surprise fire drill!
I missed seeing 8 of my classes so for the classes I did see I caught them up with things they might have missed or perhaps needed a little more practice on. I saw all kindergarten classes so we worked on paper investigations since that supported their classroom unit this week. Mrs. Hufnagel and Mrs.Wood's classes continued to work on their manners book. Mrs. Rehm's class got caught up with a lesson they missed due to Labor Day. Mr. Mason's class also caught up on a lesson from Labor day. Mrs. Engstrom's classw worked on bibliographies and citations. Ms. Durkin's class continued their study of nonfiction call numbers. Our tables activities were: Red: Yellow: Green: Blue: Purple: This week we had a Bike to School day, our 5th graders went to EcoWeek and the specials teachers sponsored a Rollerland Night.
Kindergarten are learning about wood in their classroom so we read books about wood and played a 'Wood Not Wood' Smartboard game. First Grade continued with their good manners books and enjoyed Arnie the Doughnut. Second Grade created their own treasure map after hearing How I became a Pirate. Third Grade worked on becing adept at using tables of contents. Fourth grade began learning about bibliographies and citations. I did not see either Fifth Grade class since they were having fun at Eco Week. Our tables activities were: Red: Yellow: Green: Blue: Purple: This week we had picture day and our first Shining Star Assembly of the year. I chose Mr. Mason's class to recieve the Library Golden Book.
Kindergarten enjoyed The Gruffalo this week and completed a Gruffalo coloring page where we recalled text details. First Grade completed page 3 of their 'How I show good manners with a library book' book. We also read Cloudette and Sky Dragon. Second Grade heard Enemy Pie and wrote their own Friendship Pie recipie ( a second grade learning target is to write directional nonfiction texts like recipies and How-to's). Third Grade worked on understanding book titles and enjoyed Possum Magic. Fourth Grade reviewed fiction call numbers and Fifth Grade worked on nonfiction call numbers. Our tables activities were: Red: Color Clix Yellow: Zoob Green: Omnifix cubes Blue: K-2 Duplo, 3-5 Lego Purple: color shapes Once again we were busy busy busy. This week saw us practice a lockdown drill and a tornado drill. First grade also visited the makerspace for a Three Little pigs house building activity and many kids got to make fabric bookmarks. Mr. Shauerhamer visited the fifth grade classes again to continue with his Rubik's cubes lessons. I also assigned shelves to the students who applied to Adopt-a-Shelf, I will announce our first winner next Wednesday on morning announcements. Since there was a collaboration day for teachers on Friday I missed seeing Mrs. Hawkes' class, Mrs. Ryerson's class and Mrs. Ayala's class.
With Kindergarten I read The Three Billy Goats Fluff and a nonfiction book called Goats. We then completed a 'Can Have Are' activity all about goats. With First Grade we read Little Grunt and the Big Egg and completed page 2 of our take home library book. With Second Grade we read Library Mouse - Home Sweet Home and designed our perfect house, this was a very fun design challenge and I think the students really enjoyed it. Third Grade reviewed Easy Call numbers. With Fourth Grade we discussed the Caldicott books Owl Moon and Jumanji and completed an activity about the illustrations. With Fifth Grade we reviewed Dewey Decimal call numbers. Our tables activities were: Red: Zoob Yellow: Omnifix cubes Green: 1-2 Duplo, 3-5 Lego Blue: color shapes Purple: Color Clix We've had a pretty busy week in the the Media Center! This week we continued with library stories, library rules and library searching. We also had a fire safety drill and Mr. Schauerhamer (dad of Robin and Troy) joined both fifth grade classes to teach them how to solve a rubiks cube. During checkout time a number of the students also were invited into our makerspace by Mrs. Woodcox to sew fabric bookmarks.
With Kindergarten I read the fun book Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook and did a Smartboard storybook character match. With First Grade we read Library Lil and started making a book care book that will come home when completed. With Second Grade we read The Library Mouse and then I introduced how to use our library search. Many of the second graders had already tried searching when in first grade but this was their first formal introduction to independent searching. Third, Fourth and Fifth grade brought their laptops to the library and I reviewed how to use the library search catalog and the different types of searches available. We talked about the advantages and disadvantages of the different searches available. As usual they all got a chance to independently practice and also follow along with me as I showed the differences of each search. Our tables activities were: Red: Omnifix cubes Yellow: 1-2 Duplo, 3-5 Lego Green: color shapes Blue: Color Clix Purple: Zoob |
